Health Ministry’s efforts to removes misleading, deceptive and illegal advertisements

MALACCA: Some 100 billboards, banners and buntings were pulled down by local authorities here after they were found to contain misleading, deceptive messages and erected illegally.

In a joint operation between the Health Ministry’s Pharmacy Enforcement Division and the local authorities at 3pm here today, 50 enforcement officers raided 10 locations in Ayer Keroh, Batu Berendam, Pulau Gadong and Malim Jaya.

Pharmacy Enforcement Division (Advertisement Control) deputy director Dzafarullah Daud said the operation was to remove illegal advertisements following complaints from members of the public.

“We want to prevent members of the public from falling prey to deceptive advertisements, especially advertisements about medicines that are not registered with the Health Ministry and may cause harm to their health,” he said, adding that the side effects of these medicines might be deadly.

He said it was also an offence to sell medicines claiming to be able to cure 20 types of diseases including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, asthma and weak sexual function, and it was an offence under Section 3(1) of the Medicines (Advertisement and Sale) Act 1956.
